Yes, I am interested in COBOL,
Yes Vivek is right. We need to cover quite a few subjects prior to becoming a cobol programmer on the mainframe.
However, this is just a start. Please refer to my last postings. we will be covering the following in our course
- COBOL on PC
- JCL
- DB2
- CICS
- VSAM
TSO/ISPF, ( SDSF, FILE AID…ETC)
YES, I need the following -
YOUR NAME
YOUR EMAIL ID
YOUR COUNTRY
YOUR PREFERRED TIMING
Dear all
No need to get worried . Mainframe training will sort these issues out. No programs can be written wIthout understanding how to debug them. When i learned JCL i took hardly many days to differentiate between JES 2 and JES 3.Thats never a concern. I have been coding since last 25 years on mainframe
Welcome @gdorsi . StackOverflow made a good quickstart and overview about Cobol. Check it. https://stackoverflow.blog/2020/04/20/brush-up-your-cobol-why-is-a-60-year-old-language-suddenly-in-demand/

Yes, I love COBOL. Now it’s time to refresh now, Ready to help. Thanks
Nolty - I get an error when using the link. Were you successful in getting to the course? Please advise. Thanks for your help.
I’ve been coding and developing, configuring , systems operations on Mainframes since 1975. That’s VM/370, with DOS/VSE, to OS/360/MFT, OS/VS2, MVS/3.8 , OS/390, PC/390 , to z/02 2.2, z/Linux, and z/VM, all the while learning Unix/AIX, SUNOS , to Solaris, Linux on Slackware 1.1 to Fedora (Kernel 5.+). While I don’t consider myself and expert, I know my way around. I’ve would advise anyone who wants to learn how to program on a Mainframe to proceed with some trepidation. You’ll be surprised at what you can learn in a short period of time. But don’t go in blindly as each installation is unique, and requires some hand holding by the site tenants who are in residence. JES2 , and JES3 are JOB submissions, and output spooling. So yes be aware of what they are, and each will have some JCL keywords which you might want to investigate. Debugging does requires some understanding of RTM, and what happens when a program abends, as well how to interpet a listing. For assembler programmers like myself I’ll turn off any Abend Aids , as this gets in the way.
Things I learned the hard way
- what’s in a psw that helps debugging
- where you need to go to in a DUMP for clues
- If it’s CICS, or IMS they’ll have their own debuugging clues
- how to read a dump’s listings to know where your program is located
- Why you can’t just read a DB2 trace and get anywhere
- What’s a GTF trace ??
- How to get to USS without tripping all over TSO
- You cannot run an IP Trace standalone
- Where are the DUMP datasets, and which ones where mine.
- TSO debug is a very useful tool. It’ll help you learn a lot.
Yes, it is still opening for me at home. Are you on some kind of public wifi? I think I recall github being blocked on some networks, I have no idea why.
Bob
I was able to get in by copying the link and paste in the browser. This worked going that route. Thanks.
