IBM COBOL Training?

Good afternoon everyone
There were quite a few queries from the new comers to learn cobol. Here are few tips for the beginers on picking up COBOL

  1. You don’t really need to download the cobol compiler for learning cobol . What you need is to get hold of someone who can start training you on what a cobol program looks like and give you the start.

  2. You have online web sites where you directly start coding and get the results seen when you run it.
Refer to this site - https://www.tutorialspoint.com/compile_cobol_online.php , for example.

  3. Once you have learnt the basics of cobol and practiced enough on the editor given above , you can start moving to the higher stuffs like -

A. How does Cobols fits in into mainframe ?
B. What is TSO ISPF ?
C. How to log in into Maniframe ?
D. What is JCL and how do i learn it ?
E. How does the database DB2 and/or IMS fits in into mainframe
F. Writing a program in cobol on mainframe using TSO/ISPF with or without DB2 to understand how batch processing works on mainframe
G. Understanding the CICS and how does online transaction work on mainframe.
H. Running a full fledged COBOL,CICS ,DB2 program on mainframe and running it through JCL.

Here are my thoughts on this

  1. i would like to volunteer my name for acting as a tutor and teach cobol and all other subjects on mainframe
  2. i have the slides and the training material ready for starting the course. ( infact more than 500 slides ready to start with)
  3. Please advise on how to
A, Form team who would be interested in learning cobol , Need a monitor to help me
    B. Where to beam the training example ZOOM, SKYPE, WEBEX etc .
    C. To start with I am propose 1 hour daily in order to get the things moving up. Suggest me the best time

PLEASE REMEMBER THERE WILL BE NO CHARGES OR COSTS INVOLVED IN THIS TRAINING. I would like to volunteer to give free training to all , who are interested in learning MAINFRAME.

I am open to start training with you and get myself ready for the advanced training originally intended by this IBM forum. Thank you.

Gracias

Thank you, let us know when you get to start with the course or let available your slides

GOODMORNING
As I said earlier, I am ready in all respect to start this course… my slides are all ready to start. I need volunteers to get this organized. Please see my earlier message…

DEAR
Please read my earlier messages. I am looking for volunteers to get this organized and started…
I am ready in all respect with my slides to start training on IBM mainframe …

Cool thanks for your availability!

Hi Kapitan,
I would be happy to help you if I can…
It seems to form a team you need to compile a list of interested people, from this forum, choose a platform, a time and post all of this to all interested learners. Of the platforms you mentioned, I am only familiar with ZOOM and SKYPE, and think ZOOM would be better. Give people a deadline to respond as to their interest, and then send out notifications. I would suggest noon EST, as it might work for people in multiple time zones…not too early/too late in different parts of the world. After you get some critical mass of interest, you could just post your times, platform, a link to the class, and start presenting! I would definitely be interested in a class. I am a COBOL/MVS programmer, but it’s been awhile and I could definitely use a refresher (and never learned CICS in all my programming years, so would love to learn that also). And when you said you need a monitor do you mean to monitor questions? I could possibly do that, but not sure that I can do that AND learn too, so am iffy on that!

Thanks for your generous offer!

Hi Kapitan,
I’m ready to start whenever you are. I programmed COBOL in DOS/VSE and Microfocus PC environments from 1987 to 2014. Right now I’m refreshing my basics using TutorialsPoint.

I'll do whatever I can do to help, just ask.

Thanks,
Steve

Thanks Steve.
I need to group all like minded people who would like to learn COBOL. Wondering how to get this done and wrap it up.

I also need a link on zoom or skype to get the training started. Working on that.

I request all the members to send me their consent so that we can start this asap.
Also the emails are not working . Replying to your email after i get your mail , its bounces back saying this mail id is not valid. Please do make sure that to quote your email id on which to communicate.

I request all to fill up the following and send to me on my email id as well publish it on this forum

Preferred time to attend - 7 pm to 8 pm India Time works for me (9:30 -10:30 am EST Toronto Time)

**In the mean time I am also studying Tutorials point training so that I am not completely lost and understand my concepts better when you teach it. I have ZOOM and SKYPE installed so any platform is acceptable.

Thank you very much for your time and effort in teaching us and making this happen.

Karan Manhas

I am interested in your course. I used to program extensively in Cobol many years ago but not recently due to promotions to software supervision. I am again interested in reviving my coding skills before going back on the market for remote assignments if feasible.

I can do Skype or Webex or Zoom. I am available between 8 am and 6 pm EST most days

This is why I’m a non fan of this blog. However I applaud the individuals who have signed up to offer assistance. You have correctly highlighted many of the issues that surface on these “talks”. The principal reason “Mainframe COBOL” is such an undertaking is not COBOL, but z/OS (MVS) and its associated software. Readers should pay careful attention to Kapitan’s response. IBM mainframes have a learning curve, that’s is not too difficult it present challenges that the aspiring coder ought to be aware of. Two of their flagship Mainframe OS’s z/VSE, and Z/OS have requirements that you learn JCL, system utilities and JOB control facilities (JES3 is a different animal that JES2,as is POWER). JCL on both operating systems are drastically different, and I mean “drastically”. OS400 while some consider it a Mainframe is really a “midrange” platform, as is VAX/11XX and HP Images platforms. Does it mean that you can apply your skills from other platforms, why H…ll no!!. Just be aware of the target platform features, it’s idiosyncrasies. Correcting abends, and handling program errors require a great deal of technical know how and skill, and can be mastered with the help of training. Good luck on your job searches all.

do you want my gmail address?

I am a mainframe programmer for the past 16 years. While I am happy to see so many people coming back to COBOL programming, a word of caution. Learning to write a COBOL program on a non-mainframe system is only about 10% of the task. There are many more things that you need to learn to become a mainframe programmer. To start with basics, the mainframe editor is completely key driven (function keys). So the use of a mouse on a mainframe is minimal. This is a big hindrance for people coming from non-mainframe background. Second there are no pre-defined APIs that cal be plugged in to do tasks. If you want so.ethong done, you have to write the code every time. Some of the posts above already touched on JCL. This is critical for a mainframe. Without JCLs you cannot execute batch programs. You also need to learn SDSF, File-Aid, Endevor, Abend-aid etc to be an effective mainframe programmer.
I don’t mean to discourage anyone from learning COBOL. But please don’t dream that by learning COBOL only, you are going to start getting huge offers to fill the current resource gap.
